QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN BUYING A DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING

You’ve found your dream partner, and now it’s time to find your dream ring. Shopping for a diamond engagement ring is such an exciting and memorable time in your life, but it can also come with its own set of challenges. This is one of – if not the most – important jewellery pieces you will ever own; not only because it symbolises your everlasting love and commitment, but also because it will be worn every single day, and most likely passed down to your next generation to cherish. Therefore, it’s best to choose a ring that will truly stand the test of time – in its design aesthetic as well as its durability.

Asking the right questions along the way will help guide you to the right engagement ring, as well as relieve some of the stress and enhance the excitement on your trip to the jewellery store.

IS THE DIAMOND CERTIFIED?

The diamond certification (also known as a diamond dossier) is an officially recognised document that confirms the stone’s characteristics and guarantees the genuineness of the diamond, such as the origin, colour, cut, clarity, carat weight, etc. The most widely recognised diamond grading laboratories are the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory).

If the jeweller doesn’t provide the diamond certificate, this should be a red flag in that the diamond may not be authentic or ethically sourced.

When purchasing a diamond from Shimansky, you are guaranteed throughout your lifetime that what is stated on your certificate, is what you purchased. All Shimansky diamonds over 0.5ct, and most diamonds of 0.3ct to 0.5ct, are accompanied by a diamond certificate.

WHAT ARE THE 5CS OF THE DIAMOND?

The diamond 5 Cs stand for cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, and confidence. Ask the jeweller to briefly explain the diamond’s unique characteristics to help determine which stone best fits your wishlist and budget. For example, would you prefer a larger size diamond with a lower colour grading and faint yellow tint, or a smaller diamond that is colourless?

WHAT TYPE OF METAL IS THE RING?

Whether you choose platinum or 18k yellow, rose or white gold, both precious metals are valuable, and have their distinct benefits. Aside from visual preference, other factors to consider when choosing between the two include price and durability. Here’s a summary below, but you can find out everything you need to know to decide in our "Gold or Platinum?" guide.

Gold

  • Gives you more colour options
  • Is less expensive
  • Doesn’t scratch as easily
  • Weighs less

Platinum

  • Doesn’t lose its colour
  • Is stronger than gold

Requires less maintenance

IS THE RING PLATED?

Ask about the plating of the precious metal. If it is plated with gold or rhodium (as is the case with white gold), keep in mind that this plating wears off with time and you will need to have it replated every year or so to keep it looking bright and white. Platinum, on the other hand, requires no replating.

HOW DO I CARE FOR THE RING?

Engagement rings need to be maintained and cleaned regularly to ensure the diamond is secure and continues to shine just as bright as the day you received it. We recommend asking your jeweller if there are any specific instructions on how to clean and care for your ring.

When you purchase a Shimansky creation, we offer a complimentary cleaning service to help add more sparkle to your beautiful ring. This also allows our diamond experts to inspect the diamond and ensure the setting and prongs are secure.

DOES THE RING COME WITH A WARRANTY?

While engagement rings are durable, they are not invincible, and you will likely need something fixed on your ring at some point in the future. For this reason, it’s a good idea to ask whether the ring comes with a warranty or service plan that will cover future repairs.

Shimansky offers a Lifetime Jewellery Warranty, where you are required to have your diamond ring inspected (free of charge) at any Shimansky store every 6 months from the date of purchase, to maintain the validity of this warranty.

WILL THE RING NEED TO BE SPECIALLY MADE?

Some engagement rings are available for immediate purchase, while others need to be ordered and custom-made. Asking this question will ensure the ring is ready by the time you or your partner plans to propose.

CAN YOU ENGRAVE ON THE RING?

Personalising your diamond engagement ring with a special message or date on the inside of your ring is a wonderful way to make it even more unique. Shimansky is one of the only jewellers who offer a free engraving service once you’ve purchased a diamond jewellery creation.

WHAT IS THE REFUND/EXCHANGE POLICY?

This is an important question to ask if you or your fiance is choosing the engagement ring style as a surprise. Different jewellers have different return policies, so it’s worth asking if you can exchange the ring if need be.

Should you purchase a Shimansky stock ring (excluding bespoke items or items with special finger sizing), you may return it in its original condition, within 30 days from the date you purchased it.

ENJOY THE JOURNEY

This is a big and very special purchase, so take your time and ask as many questions as you like, until you feel comfortable enough to decide on the perfect engagement ring. Most importantly, enjoy the shopping process and don’t forget to have fun!

Enjoy the journey
