THE DO’S AND DON’TS FOR PROPOSING ON TABLE MOUNTAIN

Planning a proposal is one of life’s most special moments. Getting down on one knee is all about getting the perfect ring, setting and creating unforgettable memories. With that in mind, the 7th wonder of the world, Table Mountain, is truly a magical location to get engaged and start your journey as a couple. Follow these useful tips to make the unforgettable experience and expectations of your proposal on Table Mountain a reality:

1. DO MAKE SURE TO CAPTURE THE MOMENT

When you get engaged on Table Mountain you want to share the full experience (and your diamond engagement ring) with your friends and family. Of course, it’s a personal moment for you as a couple, but all those who love you will want to know the details of the proposal and how it all happened. You can decide between hiring a photographer or using your smartphone to take the images to capture the moment. Here are some tips to follow when taking pictures on top of Table Mountain:

  • Safety first. The full edge of Table Mountain is not roped off or fenced so don’t get caught up in the moment and slip trying to take a picture of you and your partner.
  • When it comes to capturing the moment, we recommend you don’t get too fixated on getting the perfect picture. Rather take a few options and then carry on celebrating your proposal. Take in the experience rather than worrying about the set-up. The most natural and spontaneous pictures turn out to be the best ones.
  • Here are two basic rules of photography to get you started. Turn off the flash and avoid direct sunlight. Also, remember, you’ll get the most flattering pictures at sunset.

Make sure to capture the moment

2. DON’T GET LOST ON THE MOUNTAIN

Did you know hundreds of people have to be rescued from the slopes of Table Mountain every year? Always check the weather a couple of hours before you attempt your summit and get a map of the route. It’s also a good idea to inform someone you know that you are planning a hike and when you expect to return. Let them know when you will be back to deliver your exciting news.

3. DO THINK OUT OF THE BOX

Presenting your diamond engagement ring to your loved one on Table Mountain is truly a romantic gesture. Make the moment even more spectacular with a ‘Marry Me’ sign displayed in a special area on Table Mountain. Make sure to contact the Table Mountain team for any special requests so they can help you create your dream engagement. From hiring a musician to serenade you and your significant other to arranging a picnic setup waiting for you, the sky is your limit.

Do think out the box

4. DO CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION

You want the spot where you’re planning to propose to be a memorable one. This includes the right views, the right environment, and the right backdrop for your photographs. Sneak away from your partner for a morning before you plan to propose and take a trip up Table Mountain alone.

The highest point on Table Mountain is Maclear’s Beacon at 1088m. It’s located near the eastern edge of the ‘Table’. This is about a 40-minute walk from the upper cable station. This guarantees you both privacy and a 360-degree view. Based on this, there's no better place to get engaged than Cape Town.

Do choose the right location

5. DO PURCHASE A KEEPSAKE

Discover the ‘Shop at the Top’, which is in a national heritage stone building next to the Table Mountain Café. Most of the items, including the iconic Table Mountain Ring, are unique to the world heritage site. We recommend taking a special keepsake home with you and continuing to build on your memories together as a couple.
